So I'm working on my live VJ patch right now, and I run a cpumeter in it and I was thinking about dropping the frame rate from 30 to 24 when the cpu load went over say 70%, and run at 30fps when cpu is under 50%. hysterisis is smart right?

In practice though, will this actually lighten the cpu load, or is fucking with the frame rate during performance asking for trouble?

no, that should work fine. i found pd quite stable in attempts to rescue a patch.

i.e. i work live with a lot of polygons and complex models and often get carried away adding stuff until pd starts to cough.
manually lowering the framerate is one of the things to smoothen it all out.

however, this is more or less a last resort with very little gain on cpu, especially when "only" changing between 30 an 24.
if it noticably lightens your cpu, go for it. the canging itself should not be a problem.
