I'm using the IAC driver to midi-connect Pure Data to Ableton. Everything works perfectly with the [noteout] module, I could play notes in Ableton instruments. Now I would also like to control other Ableton proprieties (like volume, audio effects, changing tracks) but I couldn't understand how to do that.

Somewhere on the internet I found out that the right way to do this is using [ctlout] and Ableton Midi Mapping mode, but it isn't working at all. It actually gets the signal into Ableton, but it doesn't start mapping the thing. Maybe I should use a specific syntax with the [ctlout]? I am a total beginner with the Midi protocol.

Is there any tutorial or anything on the matter? I've been looking for this on the internet for two days, but I didn't find anything useful yet.

exactly [ctlout] is right. Have you got the message formatted right?

where $1 is the input. If you needed to send a different CC number, you'd need to use [pack f f 1] and feed the cc # into input 2, thereby creating a new list.

But make sure that you are not sending multiple CCs to Ableton because that won't work. Try to send one and map it like that first.

Now the message is ok, but I still couldn't get it to work.

Ableton blinks as the [ctlout] message bangs from Pure Data, but it doesn't map the midi signal to the selected control in Ableton.

1. Am I supposed to set something on Ableton more than simply click on the control that I'd like to map?

2. Dummy question: what are the meaning of channels and CC numbers, how should I choose the right one?

have you turned on 'Remote' for the IAC bus in abes preferences (Midi tab)?

CC numbers - Control Change Numbers, 127 in total. As part of general midi standard the numbers are assigned to different parameters, so manufacturers can mapped parameters in their products. With Pd and Ableton you can use what ever numbers you like

Channel - up to 16 (for one Port/IAC bus) so IAC bus 2 would be channel 17-32 etc

Not sure if it's applicable but I was trying to do the same thing between PD and Modul8 (it's a VJing program). Same symptoms as you're describing and no mapping.

What I discovered was that in order to do the mapping Modul8 had to be in the foreground. In other words, whenever I would go to PD to send the midi message Modul8 would receive it, but not map. I ended up using a [del 3000] to give me 3 seconds to move back to Modul8 before PD would send the midi message.

I can't believe it was all about that "Remote" option in Live preferences!
