I remember seeing a patch contained somewhere within the browser of pd, that (amongst other GUI tools) allowed you to pick a colour and it would tell you it's -1.16022e+07 value... I can't find it anywhere. I need this because I want to make a

low CPU VU.

(it's not hidden somewhere within x_all_guis, that only because I'm a dumb f^ck can I not find it, is it?)

I'm not sure if this is what you're referring to, but have a look at [cnv]'s help and look in the [pd edit] subpatch. There is a subpatch called [pd RGB_______] that outputs those values using RGB values as inputs. You can try using [colorpanel] in conjunction with it to find the value your looking for quickly.

for some damned reason -1.67475e+07 (print tells me this) will send orange-y yellow (R: 255 G: 140 B: 0) if banged directly from the [pd RGB] into [color $1( but if I try any other method, like [color -1.67475e+07( I get a purple-y pink!

Wah Deh Fuh?

I've had this same issue; it's irritating. I think this might have to do with the fact that Pd truncates floats when it displays them, but still remembers the full number internally. So that number in a message box will come out to -16747500, but that orangey yellow might actually be -16747589 or something. It just won't show all that to you.

well, to get around it, I copied the rgb subpatch to my patch, and now whenever i need the colour to be changed, i send RGB messages to the subpatch followed by a bang.
