I've been working with Pd for about 6 months now and have gotten a good handle on the audio side of it, but I have had no luck getting into video.

So once again, my first effort comes in the form of me asking somebody else to tell me how to do it... so much for independent research. (I'm lazy.)

I downloaded Gem for OSX and have the folder called "gem-0.91-3" on my desktop. All I want to know is where the hell do I put this folder? Actually I tried downloading it once before a couple months ago but got confused/frustrated so I just deleted it. (I'm also impatient.)

Anyway, I have a pretty cool audio-manipulator / midi-sequencer built and I'd really like to be able to manipulate video as well. Nothing too in depth; maybe just playing back video clips and mess with the playback speed. I just don't know where to put the Gem folder so that Pd has the proper objects or whatever.

Gem's included in Pd-extended, it works out-of-box (or dmg on Mac OS X. Check out the in progress Gem chapters for one place to start:

I have Pd-extended installed, and that's what I thought..... but I've tried downloading other people's patches and when I try them there are missing objects. For example, I just opened one up and the [gemwin] box has the dotted red outline. Doesn't that mean that Pd doesn't recognize it? And isn't gemwin one of the most basic gem objects?

Still confused.... What am I missing?

Hmm...it works fine on my Mac. Does the Pd window show Gem loading on startup?

I see that it is saying "Gem: can't load library" so that probably explains why it isn't working, but I didn't delete anything since I first installed it. I could probably try re-installing it. Do you think that would do me any good, or should I try something else first?

X11 is not loading either, which means it might not be installed. Gem on Pd-extended requires it. It should be on the OSX installation disc.

Weak. I'll have to dig around to find that disc. I love using computers for creative purposes, but this sort of thing drives me nuts. Thanks anyway.

I have the same problem.

I want to use pdp_ctrack, and it says pidip: can't load library.
It surround it with a red dashed box, any help?

My hard drive crashed a couple weeks ago (as stated in another thread) and I had the apple store replace it. I was kinda surprised after I installed Pd again that I was still getting the same X11 message on startup. I more or less figured that that sort of thing would be on there after they gave it back to me... I know I have the original installation disc somewhere.

Actually, what the hell is X11 anyway?
