my bad...
i think the problem was that i'd been trying to write to a folder with spaces in it's name: [write d:/my music projects/file.txt(
writing directly to the d:drive worked, as well as writing to a folder whose name has no spaces.
but, is there a way to write to my existing folder without changing it's name or creating a new one?
using [openpanel] should work, but you can't utilize spaces in a [message( because pd won't let you use backslashes in message boxes. Too bad, huh?
