Hallo all,
I have decided to 'bite the bullet' and install purr data on my Linux machine (it's running fine on Sierra and Windoze10). As there appears to be no idiot-proof method/tutorial for Fedora users, I am following the instructions here: https://agraef.github.io/purr-data/#building-from-source, and here (to install dependencies): https://github.com/agraef/purr-data/blob/master/README.md#linux. However, I cannot even get off the starting block: doing "sudo dnf install . . . . " for the listed dependencies gives me a huge list as follows
"No match for argument: libasound2-dev
No match for argument: libjack-jackd2-dev
No match for argument: libbluetooth-dev
. . ."

I am quite desperate to get PD (any fekn flavor) on my machine. I have previously tried vanilla pure data (rpm package), the planetccrma pd package. None of them will run, and it's starting to get me down. Any n00b-friendly guidance out there please. I don't want to have to install a dual boot system, just to get pd running on this machine.

Hey thanks; that got rid of the 'wish' error, now I get this:
Error in startup script: couldn't read file "/usr/lib/puredata/tcl//pd-gui.tcl": no such file or directory

if you navigate to that folder does it exist?
which version are you installing? (i recommend the latest version from http://msp.ucsd.edu/software.html
and which steps have you followed so far?

you should be able to:

  cd path/to/pd
    ./autogen.sh
    ./configure
    make

check line 56 of INSTALL.txt
"You can verify the configuration options that the configure step script prints:"
also line 111
"Building should take a minute or two. If compilation was successful, you can
run Pd from the build directory without installing it:"

cd bin
./pd

are you getting any errors during any of that?

the folder /usr/lib/puredata exists, but it only contains 'bin' and 'doc'; it would appear that the 'proper' puredata folder resides in the /usr/lib64 folder, which contains a tcl folder, but no pd-gui.tcl file. I followed your steps earlier, but cannot use "cd path/to/pd". Can you tell me how to navigate to the autogen.sh file please? Many thanks.

so if you download Pd version 0.48-1 source
and just extract it to your download folder
from the command line you should be able to type

cd /home/Downloads/pd-0.48-1

or whatever the directory path to your download folder is.

sometimes if it doesn't work it might mean you have spaces or unsupported characters in the names of folders.

if you do you could try adding a - or _ instead of spaces or to replace.

once you are in the directory
it should look like

name@name:~/Downloads/pd-0.48-1 $ 

you should then just be able to run

./autogen.sh

./configure

make

and then: "To install to your system using the configuration prefix (default /usr/local):"

sudo make install

Works, solved. Just need to suss out all the externals I need now. Or. . . . could I install PurrData, using your method above? I'll try it.

@brendanmac Fedora uses its own package format called RPM.

I usually don't get involved in distro wars. But unless there is a requirement that you use Fedora I would strongly suggest using a distro like Ubuntu. It doesn't use RPM packages but instead uses so-called "deb" packages. It has more documentation, a greater variety of users (non-technically and technical users), and it is geared toward new Linux users.

You've already hit installation bugs with both Purr Data and Pd Vanilla. Fedora is a great distro, but for small software projects like Pd you are much more likely to find support, documentation, and ease-of-use in an apt-based distro like Ubuntu (or Debian, or Linux Mint, or any other distro that uses "deb" packages). Problems like these are going to quickly pile up as you try out various Linux audio programs because those maintainers don't have time to create and maintain an RPM in addition to deb packages. (And deb is by far the more popular package format.)

Just to give you an example-- without any coordination whatsoever Albert Graef swooped in and started an Ubuntu "PPA" for Purr Data (which-- again-- uses "deb" packages). That means you can install Purr Data on a stable version of Ubuntu and get Purr Data updates whenever you update the system. Alternatively, nobody has touched the old Pd-extended RPM for years.

I use Debian and Ubuntu. IOhannes is a Debian member and maintains deb packages for Pd Vanilla. Use a "deb"-based distro like Ubuntu and you'll have a much easier Linux experience. :

Hey @jancsika, many thanks for the advice. I chose Fedora, because it was my first exposure to Linux (Fedora 16 I think), based on a system at the Uni where I taught Max/PD/Supercollider, using PlanetCCRMA real time kernel. So, yes, I should really consider Mint or Ubuntu. Good advice mate l)
