Sorry - Not a Pd issue per ce but I imagine some folk here have come across the same problem.

In OSX I'm trying to set up midi over a network. Instead of connecting a computer to the other end i want to keep the network in the same computer. I want to avoid IAC busses as its been suggested to me that send midi through tcp/ip is subject to less jitter and is particularly suitable for midi clock.

I need to tap into it somehow but I cant figure it out. HAs anyone successfully routed midi through an internal network on the same computer?

This is new in Tiger I think - 'CoreMIDI' API - previous versions needed 3rd party stuff to do it:

I'm sure I remember seeing freeware/open source too but where? I'm assuming here that routing within the computer should be possible...

Sorry I should have said! I am already using the Built in Tiger network driver

The main point is that in need to route the network internally as you say. If 2 computers can talk then Im sure that I can create 2 virtual servers on one machine....

well, I can't make it work either. I setup MaxMSP & PD 0.39-extended rc2 & a 'network' session in Apple audio midi setup. I configured both apps to use this session for midi out (max) & midi in (pd).

PD couldn't see anything arriving at a notein object (in omni mode - no args) - I was definately sending from Max. Max couldn't communicate with itself either for that matter, when using the network session.

When I switched the inputs to IAC bus #1 - the communication all worked fine within the apps & between them.

Guess that saves me reading the documentation (if there is any).

Probably everything is handled by IAC inside localhost - since this is what feeds the TCP/IP midi routing probably. I wonder if it really would be any more efficient...

OH well, thanks for trying tho. I guess one way to smooth out jitter would be to average it and send that through a line or low pass filter
