I want to create a simple knob(dial) object to control the volume going to the dac but I cannot find the knob object in the vanilla PD. Should it be included? vslider and hslider works fine. In this video http://tinyurl.com/djkdslf the knob object is added by simply typing [knob] but this does not work for me.

Edit: Also just found out that [counter] is missing. This is the first time I use PD vanilla since I used to use pd-extend but I must be missing some installation or configuration steps here. Please advise.

Pd vanilla has much fewer objects than pd-extended, and I believe both objects you point are indeed not included. If I am not mistaken, [knob] is part of the flatgui library (moonlib also has a knob called [mknob]), while [counter] is part of the cyclone library.

I haven't used pd vanilla in ages, but I heard that the Deken plugin works very well and makes installation of other libraries very easy, see: https://github.com/pure-data/deken

This is all accurate, however both knob objects were broken in 0.47. [mknob] was recently fixed for Windows, but I still haven't found a way of getting either working in Ubuntu. Anyone else?

@LiamG What do you mean by broken in 0.47, do you mean that the knob objects that pd vanilla 0.47 imports using Deken are broken? One possible solution would be to copy the objects from pd-extended's extra folder into your pd vanilla installation; would you like me to send some files to you? I am also on Linux, so it should work well.

@gsagostinho I mean broken as in not working! It's not a problem with declaring externals, but some incompatibility between the the knob external and the 0.47 Vanilla release. Moonlib's [mknob] was fixed recently by Christof Ressi, and the Deken package "moonlib/0.3.4 (windows... " works well, but I still can't get it working in Linux, even with v0.3.4.

I added flatgui and cyclone but still no [knob] or [counter].. I guess I am back to the old obsolete pd-extend 0.43.4. I hope there one day will be an updated version of extend, but I guess this is wish thinking.

Counter works fine, try creating [cyclone/counter]. If you're on Windows, you can get the moonlib library and then use [moonlib/mknob]. If you're not on Windows then the best option might be Balwyn's scalar knob: http://forum.pdpatchrepo.info/topic/10146/scalar-knob/2

If you want a package where everything works out of the box, you might consider using PD L2Ork or the recent Purr Data fork. The jury is out on whether these forks are the "new extended", but they certainly come with many of its benefits, plus a whole lot more.

@mkll the chances of an updated version of pd extended are virtually 0, particularly now that vanilla has the Deken plugin, and also since the development of Pd-l2Ork (Linux only) and Purr Data (all OSes). I really recommend you giving a try on Purr Data if you are considering going back to extended. That said, as Liam pointed out, your problem might be something else and creating objects by using their library name before the object (such as [cyclone/counter]) might solve it. Also, at least here on my Linux installation, I am able to create simply [counter] after adding the cyclone library to the Pd's "path".

@LiamG my vanilla is version 46.something, and I use it very seldom. When I have some time I will upgrade to version 47 and see if those knobs work here on my side. But since you think this is a problem with Pd, did you report it to Miller and the others in the mailing list?
