The first way saves you a multiply.
But the cool thing about applying the accent to the envelope parameters, rather than just to an inline [*~] to affect volume, is you may use it to change something else like decay.
This hi-hat example patch slightly modifies the decay (longer) when the accent is applied.

Hi Obiwan,
like the sound of those hihats - I'm interested to know how you come up with those particular frequencies that seem so precise, or is it mainly from trial and error?
Also, what's the purpose of the switch~ object. I'm aware that you can use it to change the block size, but not sure why and when you'd want to do this, and what it's actually doing in this patch.
Finally, what is the pd programmer abstraction?

lovely thanks, i suddenly realized that when drifting off to sleep. I think i need to get out more! I'm dreaming of patch cables and execution order...and getting mugged by Dirk Benedict armed with a stanley knife. Pd should come with a health warning label!!
brettb - it shuts of the dsp of that subpatch when the output reaches a certain threshold. Useful to save cpu, especially when theres load of other stuff going on.

Trial and error Brett.
Well kind of:
The alg is FM with a complex modulator. The first 3 values make the modulator by AM and are close together around 800-3000Hz. The 4th parameter is the FM index, setting how pure / coloured the spectrum is. The last one is the base freq which sets the pitch.
The last two spectrum patches make components above the Nyquist so they fold over and alias
which makes extra low frequencies - not very nice sounding, but good for techno.
The programmer is a tool to create the message lists.
Boonier, I think Dirk only used razor sharp charm as a weapon, it was Mr T who mess up ya face foo!

I was thinking about this old patch today and I updated it. Instead of a 3 component modulator I replaced it with a ring modulator. The envelope now crossfades between the modulation components and modulates the FM amount. Plus there's a bit of feedback in the FM circuit itself to make it more noisy. Dunno if this sounds any good to you, but I think it's an improvement.
