Chris McCormick has done a wonderfull android app, it enable you to run your pd patches on your android smartphone and play with them anywhere, provided that you keep it vanilla.

1- Go there : http://droidparty.net/
and download the apk on your PC

2- Download the attached zip, (it's a tested and working patch.) unzip it on you computer.

3- Search File Expert on the android market and install it (https://market.android.com/details?idxcxin.filexpert)

4- Once file expert is installed, fire it up, and click on Share (in the bottom line) -> choose "enable web sharing" (this will share your sdcard localy). A message appears and gives you info such as an adress, a username and a password (remember it, or keep it displayed onto your phone)

5- On your pc, launch your preferred browser enter the adress, it will prompt you for usename and password.

6- Double click on the big icon, and you have access to your SDcard.

7- Create a folder of you choice (right click -> New Dir), enter it and upload the apk (right click ->upload). Once the upload finished, just click the uploaded file it will install on its own.

8- Go back to the root folder of the SDcard, create a new folder of you choice to put your patches (say "Pure-Data"), enter it. Create a new folder called XY-Pad, and upload all the files from the zip in this folder. "droidparty_main.pd" is the main patch you can have a look at it on your PC first.

9- Close File Expert on your phone by pressing back several times, and launch PdDroidParty it will find your patches on its own.

10- Have Fun !

note : I choose to use an app to share you sd card wia wifi (because it's faster than pluging and mounting your phone each time you want to test something), but you can of course use USB cable to do all the transfers beetween phone and computer. But you'll need a file browser anyway to install the transfered apk

edit : you need to authorize non-market apps to be installed. Just go in Parameters -> Application and check the first box (something like "authorize non-market application")

I'm trying to install PdDroidParty on my Samsung Galaxy 3 with Android 2.1, but get a parse error when I launch the .apk. Any clues / hints?

I had downloaded "What Comes Around" and it seemed to work (although very very slowly, probably due to my device's age and speed).

In any case, this looks great!
I didn't seem to see any mention of reading the accelerometers into PdDroidParty objects... any plans for that?

Well, a simple firmware update fixed it. Now to play with that DroidParty!

Maybe I'm just a noob (probably), but the patches do not seem to load from my sd card. I have successfully installed the pddroidparty app. I went back to the sd card folder and made a new folder and uploaded the .pd files. On the app itself I get a green "compatible patches found", but the rest is black and no apps seem to be apparent. Could someone please help.

the main patch of your app should be place in a folder with the name of you app, and be called 'droidparty_main.pd'

so you should avec something like this if you app is called 'sequencer' :
sdcard/pd/sequencer/droidparty_main.pd

then in the list you should see an entry called 'sequencer'

sdcard/pd/sequencer/droidparty_main.pd did not work for me. Probably has to do with the name of the app? Thanks for your fast reply though

it has changed in latest versions now the root directory of all you patches should be
sdcard/pdDroidParty

Hello, is there a form of sending MIDI messages via USB, in PdDroidParty?

finally I managed to install it on a LG phone running android 4.1.2 but whenever i try to launch a patch it suddenly crashes.. anyone experienced this?

what version of Droidparty are you using ? (the last one is 264 -pretty recent)
what patches are you launching ? did you try the tests and demos available at http://droidparty.net/ ?

which droidparty_main_pd ? Have i to rename my patch as "droidparty_main.pd" or have i to put my patch and files in the same folder with droidparty_main.pd ?

-Pack the patch subfolder into an Android zip resource: `./pack-patch`

What does `./pack-patch` mean ? Is this a folder path ?
I have dowloaded RAR for Android and i can make a .rar file but i don't know where to put it.

-Follow the instructions in the README.txt file for building.

• create a folder called 'patch' and put your patch (which has to be named as "droidparty_main.pd') into it
• './pack-patch' is a bash script, if you wanna see what it does open it with a text editor and try to read it.
• if you cannot run './pack-patch', .zip your patch folder and put it into res/raw directory
• README.txt resides in the main folder called MySynthesizer

I am stuck at the starting gate. When I run PdDroidParty on my Samsung tablet it finds no compatible apps. So all I have is a black screen with a message at the top. There seems to be no way to put in a search path.

I have a folder on my internal SD card named pdDroidParty. In it are the three folders created by the demo, test, and abstractions archives. I would assume that at least these would be found!

I think it's not possible.

Data structure are not supported in the sense that there is no class to display them as gui elements on the android side.

Dan Wilcox at pd-party (ios version) as listed this as a possible future feature. It's probably something that would be interesting but may require a consequent amount of work.

What would you like to do that isn't possible to do yet ?

There is actually several options here

• either you are a developper so you can directly use libpd as an audio engine, and use the api to send or receive data from your patch to/from you favorite language (c# c++ java etc.) you can then create your ui in this programming language. Plasma sound uses a mix of android specific code and the processing-for-android drawing api. With this method you need to use something like eclipse or android studio but you can create binary signed apps that you can upload to the android store. (it works great, I've published several apps with this combination).

• either you want to stick with pd :
  1- pddroidparty will run your patch in a specific android app emulating the pd gui with a few additions (touch surface etc.), the sources from Chris target android only. But Pd-party by danomatika will target ios soon (now beta I think).
  2- mobmuplat is also a very neat project, where you can do probably a little more with the graphics. android and ios.
  3- sceneplayer on android is also a way to read patchs on android, it provides a way to display/hide and move images too. It target android, the ios version rjdj is sadly long lost.
  4- ppp mentionned before, will help you publish app using pd as a wysiwyg editor in the same way of pddroidparty, but you'll end up with a signed binary ready to distribute. It also packs a midi clock shared via wifi to sync several apps with one another.

I think it sums up all the options here.

So back to data-structures : data-structures are in libpd, but none of the projects above supports them to my knowledge, you can't display or interact with them. If you program you can probably access them through libpd, draw/manipulate them in the programming language of your choice.
