There's Audacity as well, that's not as powerful as one would like it to be perhaps.

Me and my band actually do our mastering in Reaper. Its mixer is awesome and the routing matrix is the bomb!

edit: there's no limitations to the free version as far as I know. the only thing being you have to buy it if you want a commercial license. (I think. I'll actually go and check that out and do another edit)

edit2: "Download the full, uncrippled, unexpiring evaluation version of REAPER, and give it a test drive. If it suits you, you'll need a license.

Please see the purchase page for pricing and licensing details."

Also, I have an old trial version of Peak that never expires. Not sure if they've changed that in the newer version.. I don't think it does multiple tracks anyway, just mono or stereo.

I was searching for same thing some time ago. I was used to Vegas and Soundforge, but I wanted go legal/opensource Here are my results, all freeware:

Wave editor:

Wavosaur - definitely good choice, very similar to SF, fast editing, markers...

Multitrack editor:

Audacity - for me not very user friendly, never get used to marker concept..., but works good

MULAB - very good routing/bus concept, many effects, MIDI tracks support, I don't like GUI especially zooming and wave display... free version has limited number of tracks

ACID xPress - free version of ACID, limited functions (export only 128 kbps mp3 ), but useful for checking loops and fast song concept preparation

Traverso - not tested yet, but looks promising however UI is little bit strange

Actually I'm working on GUI multitrack editor for pd ( http://code.google.com/p/visualtracker/ ). There will be alpha version released soon!

all the best
ales
