Hi, I'm pretty new to pd but understand many of the concepts as I've been a written language programmer for quite some time.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to stream or grab video from other applications / programs running on a system for mixing with other videos in pd? I can mix videos, got those examples to work and have been playing with them.

However I want to mix in video from a program called IBNIZ (http://pelulamu.net/ibniz/), which is a live visual/audio coding lauguage. Any ideas?

I found this and it seems like it's up the right alley but not specifically to do with streaming / grabbing video from programs, right? http://puredata.info/community/conventions/convention09/zmolnig.pdf

Thanks for any help in this,

Hi d3,

It’s great to see you diving into video mixing with Pure Data! Grabbing or streaming video from another program like IBNIZ and mixing it in PD can indeed be tricky but is definitely possible with the right setup.

To grab video from external programs, you might consider the following approaches:

Screen Capture to Video Stream:
Use screen-capture software to stream the output from IBNIZ as a virtual webcam or a video feed. Tools like OBS Studio can help capture specific application windows and broadcast them as an RTMP stream or virtual camera. Then, you can bring that stream into PD using external libraries like GEM or Ofelia.

Direct Integration:
If IBNIZ has an option to output its visuals to a shared memory buffer or as a video stream, you could capture that directly in PD using plugins or extensions that handle video input.

External Tools:
Another possibility is using middleware like FFmpeg to convert the IBNIZ output into a format that PD can read. For example, you could use FFmpeg to stream the visuals to a local server and then access that stream from PD.

Feel free to share updates or questions—I'd love to hear how your project progresses!

And congrat @Jona for your impressive work!

After seeing ofelia paused for long time, I helped a bit IOhannes to point the basic issues that prevented MacOS version to work properly in order to keep at least one graphic lib alive in pd... now thanks to his work Gem came back into the game (and is still quite actively maintained).

But I must admit, me and my students where a bit frustrated by gem limitations or ofelia complexity during workshop... so I recently switched to https://cables.gl/ and I can say that I don't regret it for now.
I learned the tool in only one month, did an interactive works with it for a big design event in Asia and made my first workshop in Taïwan at same time... I will use it for teaching interactive art as it's a powerful free online tool, open source, have many ressources, there is a local app version, and... all objects (called operators) are editable in javascript.

I am still keeping an eye at pd and Gem but my energy is currently focused on cables, at least for teaching.

Currently not used. (I thought I deleted it, oops.)

It could be used for one case, though: red seems to be at the end of the hue cycle, 0 and 1. The current approach will match either slightly-yellowish or slightly-purplish reds, but not both in one range. I think (but haven't tested) you could put "0.5 0 0" into pix_offset's right inlet, shifting red away from the wraparound boundary, and then match a continuous range of reds (by pretending they're a different color).

I also found [pix_colorclassify] that could be helpful to separate channels easily

I tried it but found the results difficult to interpret. If you colorclassify and then extract the red channel, it will be sensitive to yellows as well (and there's that brown for "uncertain" which shows up also in all channels).

@ddw_music [pix_colormatrix] will pass just one colour or a combination set by a 4x4 matrix...

Oh right... Thanks. It's been awhile. IIRC it would also need pix_separator to avoid clobbering the original image.
